Enhancing Student Performance in Edexcel GCE Business London 12th October 2021

After what has been an incredibly challenging year for teachers and students this is a perfect opportunity to spend a day refocusing on the value and joy of teaching and learning. Throughout the day we will look at easy to implement strategies to enhance our students’ performance and bring fresh approaches into the classroom.

Session 1 Knowledge is necessary but not sufficient!

Not just this year, but every year, we understand that knowledge is the foundation that underpins exam success. We are not going to look at the research but focus on how we can take some of the current “buzzwords” and quite simply make them work for us, adding value in the classroom.

Interleaving as starters and plenaries
Elaborative interrogation as the first step to analysis
Dual coding

Session 2 Developing lines of contextualised analysis

When building on knowledge, students often struggle to master writing both analytically and in context. This session will consider how we can build practice into lessons on a regular basis, helping students master this difficult skill.

Hexagonal thinking
The role of data and quantitative skills
A more holistic approach to teaching or revising strategy in Year 13

Session 3 Opportunities for critical thinking

The ability to question, challenge and reflect on arguments enhances the ability to form judgements, prioritise and write with depth of understanding.

Questioning
Strong v tentative lines of argument
The role of counterbalance

Session 4 Effective use of MOPS

We all appreciate the need to incorporate MOPS into strong judgements, accessing top levels in evaluation. This session will look at how we can use MOPS in the classroom to help students gain both application marks and write A* evaluations.

Reading the extract
Strong evaluative conclusions based on prioritisation of MOPS
Classroom activities
Providing feedback
